Triaxial Strength
Since in actual conditions, the rocks are under triaxial stress, determine their position in these conditions it is important to calculate the bearing capacity of the rocks, dam design, studying the mechanism of creating faults and folding and underground excavation. By performing this test, the rock fracture is drawn and determined parameters, based on the resistance of the rock.
The researchers by using this test found that fracture failure is not only a mechanism for rock failure but many of the stones in the high side pressure they show a very completely flexible behavior. There are different methods for performing a triaxial test, in which, different instruments, how to perform and measurement is different. The simplest and most common method of obtaining triaxial stress in the laboratory, apply side pressure hydraulic with axial stress to cylindrical sample.
To perform this test, the following equipment is required:
- Pressure compression jack is to apply vertical pressure that is normally used with concrete breaker jack.
- A tri-axial or Hoek Cell that is made in different sizes.
- Hand-operated hydraulic pump for applying side pressure.
