Test Sieves

It is common practice to use a Sieve test to obtain the size distribution of sand grains. The process is described in ASTM C 136. To do this, a piece of the sieve is used, with the holes in the floor having a precise, and this grid is made using a wire. So that the set of sieves are put together, the sieve is placed in a hole with larger holes above and the smaller sieve is placed down, then the dry soil, where all the hollows are broken and only the soil grains are present on the sieve. They shed the top and shifted the sieve for a period of time (according to standard) so that the soil grains pass through it. It is clear that beads are smaller than sieve holes and larger beads remain on the sieve wires.

  • Note: This method is logical for coarser seeds, but for smaller grains, it is not suitable because the grains of the very fine soil stick together and thus the method of the silk will no longer be suitable. If the amount of fine grains is high, we may first have to pass through the soil and rough beans, and after washing larger particles and destroying the husk, we begin to sift.

A series of sieves with different sizes available. The boundary between sand and gravel is chosen arbitrarily. According to the Soil Classification System, to remove gravel from the sand is used the sieve No. 4 (4 holes per 1 inch). The hole size of this sieve is 4.75 mm and to remove the sand from the silt and clay from NO. 200 whose hole size is 0.075 mm. According to the English Standard, 0.063 mm is the boundary between sand and slab, and 2 mm is the border between the sand and the oceans.
