Determination of Liquid Limit ( Casagrande Method )
Atterberg Limits defined a benchmark for the amount of soil moisture. Based on these criteria, there are three defined for the amount ofmoisture in the water. Shrinkage limit (SL), the Plastic and liqiud limits. Fine-grained soils based on the amount of water absorbed, several modes tend to take.
When the fine-grained clay minerals in the soil, soil can be formed by adding some moisture without crushing, the sticky nature of clay surrounded by water absorption caused. In the early twentieth century a Swedish scientist named Albert Atterberg, and the way to describe the stiffness of fine-grained soil, with different moisture content devised by him. And then in 1932 by Arthur Casagrande in paper format was standardized in soil mechanics. In very Low moisture content, soil acts more like a solid object. The high moisture content of the soil and water are flowing like a fluid. Therefore, based on the optional basis, depending on the amount of moisture, soil behavior can be divided into 4 modes. Solid, Semi-solid, Plastic and Liquid state.
- The moisture content at which a soil passes from solid to semi-solid called ( Shrinkage state )
- The moisture content at which a soil passes from semi-solid to pasty called ( Plastic state )
- The moisture content at which a soil passes from pasty to liquid called ( Liquid state ). This parameter also called Atterberg limits. The parameters considered in the classification of fine-grained soil.

Technical Specifications:
It’s a mechanical tool with a Brass cup (bowl) in diameter of 54 mm and a thickness of 2 mm and weight of 200 gr. This brass cup from the rear side joint by a lever on two bases which are on a platform with hinges by turning the handle cup move up and fall down. And in fact, the cup hit the floor of the unit.
With this tool a steel bar (rod) is designed to set up a standard slot in the soil sample containing cup, the rod can be split trapezoidal cross-section which is The small base at the bottom of a width of 2 mm and at above the base of its large width of 11 mm and a height 8 mm.
The device is available in two forms:
1-Manual
2-Electrical
